When Wemark Drug was established in 1902 in downtown Kenmare, it had a pharmacist’s compound bench, that since 1992, has been a soda fountain at Kenmare Drug.

Relics of Kenmare’s earliest days . . . These fixtures were part of one of Kenmare’s original pharmacies, Wemark Drug, with parts of it dating back to 1902. Today, the stately fixtures are part of the White Buffalo Soda Fountain in Kenmare Drug.

When Wemark Drug was established in 1902 in downtown Kenmare, it had a pharmacist’s compound bench, that since 1992, has been a soda fountain at Kenmare Drug.

Former owner and retired pharmacist Paul Carlson said he doesn’t know the exact date, but the White Buffalo Soda Fountain is most likely an original part of the store when it was built in 1902.

“I’m sure it’s original when Wemark set up the store,” Carlson said. “That’s when a lot of brick stores were built in Kenmare.”

Carlson, who represents three generations of pharmacists in the Carlson family, said the soda fountain was taken out of the Wemark building in 1960 when his father purchased the pharmacy.
