Niobe elevator to close in January...

A Ward County elevator that has handled grain for 104 years will be closing on Jan. 1.

CHS SunPrairie announced the Niobe Station elevator has outlived its usefulness and will be shuttered.

“It’s uncertain what will happen to it,” said SunPrairie General Manager Brad Haugeberg. “We’ve been using Niobe for lesser commodities.”

Haugeberg said the SunPrairie board will have to meet to see what the best course of action for this country elevator will be.

“The volumes have dwindled and it’s tough to make ends meet,” he said. “We’re constantly challenged to look at under performing assets.”

Closed yes, destroyed no! Depending on what the board decides, the prairie skyscraper might still have some life left in it. It could be sold to another company, a farmer might purchase it, it could be used for storage only; there’s a number of possibilities, according to Haugeberg...
