Mallards win Babe Ruth Championship

The Renville County Mallards baseball team is the 2013 Gateway Sectional Babe Ruth champion. The team consists of a mix of Kenmare and Mohall players.

Team is mix of Kenmare and Mohall players

The Renville County Mallards  baseball team is the 2013 Gateway Sectional Babe Ruth champion. The team consists of a mix of Kenmare and Mohall players.

Going into the tournament as the number three seeded team, the Mallards had high expectations for the tournament.

After a disappointing loss against Surrey in tournament play last season, the Mallard players went home excited about the prospects for the year 2013’s team.

The team was composed of nine Kenmare players which included Brett Froseth, Nolan Ercanbrack, Konnor Keysor, Kolton Jesz, Hunter Rodin, Clay Froseth, Jacob Rodin, Braydan Winzenburg and Trey Balvitsch. Coach John Fetterhoff was the Kenmare coach.

The team was rounded out with six Mohall players, including Connor Brackenbury, Statler Olson, Berkley Santos, Wyatt Schmit, Chase Gates and Talon Thompson and coached by Laurie Dutcher.

Going into the tournament with a 17-3 record, the Mallards played their first game against Garrison, winning 10-1.

Leading the Mallards in hitting against Garrison were: Konnor Keysor who went 2 for 2 with 2 walks, a single, a double, 1 RBI, and 3 runs; and Connor Brackenbury, who went 2 for 2 with a walk, 2 singles, 3 RBIs, and 1 run.

A game scheduled for later in the day was rained out and the team returned to Crosby on Thursday.

In first round action on Thursday, the boys won a hard fought game against Makoti, a team that has always played strong against the Mallards in past games.

The boys rallied in the fifth inning, winning 5-1.

Connor Brackenbury was the winning pitcher for the Mallards. Credited with hits for the Mallards in this game were: Brett Froseth who was 1 for 4 with a double, had 2 RBIs, and scored 1 run; Statler Olson went 1 for 2 with 2 walks and a single; and Hunter Rodin was 1 for 3 with a single, and scored 1 run. Connor Brackenbury scored 2 runs for the Mallards.

Later in the evening, the boys had another exciting game against Crosby, winning 8-6.

It came down to the final inning to decide the winner of the match-up, with Connor Brackenbury pitching the final inning to seal the win; however, Brett Froseth was the winning pitcher for Renville County.

Leading the team in hits were: Konnor Keysor who was 1 for 3 with a double and scored 1 run; Connor Brackenbury was 2 for 3 with 2 singles, had 1 RBI, and scored 2 runs; Berkley Santos was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a single, scored 2 runs and had 1 RBI; Statler Olson, who was 2 for 2 with a walk, a single, and a double, had 1 RBI, and scored 2 runs; and Hunter Rodin finished with a double and scored a run

With no losses in a double elimination tourney, the Mallards met the Stanley Blue Jays on Friday. The Mallards jumped to a lead in the first inning, 5-0 and held the Jays, winning 10-3.

Credited with the win in this game was Hunter Rodin. Getting hits for the Mallards: Konnor Keysor went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and scored 1 run; Brett Froseth had 2 walks and scored 2 runs; Hunter Rodin was 2 for 3 with 2 singles, 3 RBIs, and scored 1 run; and Kolton Jesz was 1 for 2 with a single, and had 2 RBIs.

Konnor Keysor was named to the All League Babe Ruth Team and Connor Brackenbury was named MVP.

Players on the Mallard team have been together for two years. In 2012, the Renville County Mallards offered Kenmare the opportunity to play with their team. Both teams had experienced low numbers and difficulty fielding a team on game day. It has been a winning combination since.

 

Babe Ruth team finishes regular season strong

Renville County vs. Surrey
The Renville County Mallards hosted Surrey in Lansford on Tuesday, July 9, where they added two more wins to their record.

The Mallards beat Surrey 6-5 in the first game. The winning pitcher was Hunter Rodin with 5 strikeouts. The losing pitcher was Aaron Sandy.

 At bat Brett Froseth went 2-3, 2 singles, RBI, run; Wyatt Schmidt went 2-3, double, single, run; Hunter Rodin went 2-3, 2 singles; and Chase Gates went 1-3, double, run.

The Mallards came out on top once again, beating Surrey 15-5 in the second game. The winning pitcher was Brett Froseth with 1 strikeout. The losing pitcher was Seth Aberle.

At bat Konnor Keysor went 2-4, walk, hit by pitch, single, triple, RBI, 4 runs; Jacob Rodin had three walks (100 percent on base percentage), 3 runs; and Statler Olsen went 1-4, walk, single, RBI, run.

 There were a lot of walks in the second game, which is why the batting stats are not so impressive.

Renville County vs. Crosby
The Mallards traveled to Crosby on Thursday, July 11, where they came out with one loss and one win.

The first game results saw Renville County with 1 and Crosby with 3. The winning pitcher was Trent Bossingham with 7 strikeouts. The losing pitcher was Statler Olson, also with 7 strikeouts.

At bat Chase Gates had 1 run, while Clay Froseth went 1-2, single.

The second game results saw a turn around, with Renville County with 4 and Crosby with 3. The winning pitcher was Talon Thompson with 8 strikeouts. The losing pitcher was Ashlyn Bailey.

At bat Talon Thompson went 1-3, walk, single, run; Statler Olson went 0-3, 3 walks, 1 run; Hunter Rodin went 0-3, run, walk; and Brett Froseth went 0-3, run, RBI.
