Celebrate America’s great outdoors and thrill your senses with a visit to the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge at Kenmare during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 9-15.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of stepping foot on refuge land or in the Des Lacs NWR Visitors Center, now is the perfect time to see what you’ve been missing!
The Des Lacs NWR belongs to a nationwide network of federal lands--the National Wildlife Refuge System--dedicated to the protection of wildlife habitat and wildlife species. The nation’s 553 national wildlife refuges and 38 Wetland Management Districts not only protect the nation’s natural resources, but also offer a range of wildlife-dependent recreation.
Did you know North Dakota has more refuges than any other state in the country? North Dakota contains 63 national wildlife refuges, which encompass more than 290,000 acres. In addition, there are 11 wetland management districts with over 254,000 acres of waterfowl production areas.
National wildlife refuges play a critical role in preserving America’s rich wildlife legacy. Without the refuges’ important conservation work, the country would lose many species of plants and animals that help clean the air, filter the water, pollinate crops and help people understand their place in the natural world.
To celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week this year, the Des Lacs Refuge is holding a “Creatures of the Night’ Program during the Haunted Hayride program on October 13 at 6:00 pm. Join us for a frightfully exciting and educational evening full of surprises!
For more information or to register groups of 10 of more, please contact Refuge headquarters at 385-4046, ext 221.
Americans have a proud tradition of working to protect and preserve the nation’s natural resources. You can be part of all that, right here at the Des Lacs Refuge. Consider volunteering or joining a Friends Group.
National Wildlife Refuges across the country will be holding events for National Wildlife Refuge Week. If you are traveling during Refuge Week, you can find an event near your destination by going to the Refuge System events calendar online at www.fws.gov/refuges/SpecialEvents.
