Kyle Kienholz made his first rounds last Wednesday as an officer with the Kenmare Police Department.
“It was a gamble,” he said about making the trip for the Kenmare interview from his hometown of Delano, Minnesota, just west of the Twin Cities. “I’m a long way from home, but there’s a lot more competition at home for the jobs open.”
He admitted he had much to learn, starting with the layout of the town. However, he also felt comfortable in Kenmare after growing up in a town of 4,000 to 5,000 residents.
“In a smaller department, I feel like I’m doing more,” he said. “I’ll be a part of 33 percent of what happens.”

Kienholz traced his interest in law enforcement back to elementary school and a particular D.A.R.E.
