The Lewis & Clark baseball team beat the top-seeded team in Region 7 twice, but finished as runners-up in the regional tournament played on fields at Watford City and Williston last week.
On Thursday, the No. 4 Wildcats fell to the No. 3-seeded Trenton-Trinity Christian squad 7-3 in the championship round. T-TC held a slim 3-2 lead after the first inning, but added a single run in each of the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the win, while Lewis & Clark managed only one more run in the fourth inning.
MacKenzie Gray took the loss for the Wildcats on the mound, while Austin Schell picked up the win. Weather was a factor in the game, with the strong wind challenging batters and fielders on both sides. “Most of the pitching resources were used as the pitch count grew with each inning and game that day,” said Jana Fjeldahl, mother of Wildcat senior Tyler Fjeldahl.
In semi-finals play earlier on Thursday, T-TC topped Lewis & Clark 2-1 in eight innings. The two teams held each other scoreless through five innings, then both teams scored a single run in the sixth. The 1-1 tie remained intact through the seventh inning, but T-TC crossed the plate in the eighth inning to win the game.
Aaron Schenfisch pitched for the Wildcats, while Trenton Hove had the mound for T-TC.
In the other semi-finals game that day, Lewis & Clark shut out Watford City 3-0, defeating the No. 1 team for the second time in the tournament.
Tristan Gray earned the win from the mound, while Dakota Neether pitched the loss for the Wolves.
The Wildcats opened up the first inning with 3 runs. They finished with 6 hits in the game and held Watford City scoreless through seven innings.
Wildcats upset Wolves
In Wednesday’s action, Lewis & Clark surprised the Wolves 3-2, behind Austin Lee on the pitcher’s mound.
The two teams remained scoreless through three innings before each scored 2 runs in the fourth inning. The Wildcats scored again in the seventh inning, finishing the game with 4 hits and only 1 error, while the Wolves had 5 hits and 4 errors. In other opening round action that day, T-TC shut down No. 2 Mohall Lansford Sherwood 10-0 and Watford City eliminated MLS 9-0.
All-Region honors
Four Wildcats were named to the All-Region 7 team, including Austin Lee, Tyler Fjeldahl, Cale Neshem and Aaron Schenfisch.
They joined Adam Undlin of MLS; Austin Schestler, Martin Kimball, Alex Davy and Justin Thomas of DLB; Trenton Hove, Lane Huck, Walker Lindemann and Michael Rademacher of Trenton-Trinity Christian; and Andrew Sampsel, Brandon Allex, Quayde Shores, Dakota Neether and Nate Egeberg of Watford City.
