L&C boys golf team makes fourth consecutive trip to State

The Lewis & Clark boys’ golf team recently capped off the 2012 season with a trip to the ND State Class “B” Boys’ Golf Meet, which was held south of Fargo, at Oxbow Country Club, on May 29 and 30.

The Lewis & Clark boys’ golf team recently capped off the 2012 season with a trip to the ND State Class “B” Boys’ Golf Meet, which was held south of Fargo, at Oxbow Country Club, on May 29 and 30.

The team earned their 4th consecutive trip to the state meet with a runner-up finish at the Region 6 golf meet, held at Fox Hills Golf Course in Watford City on Friday, May 18. The team’s score of 330 trailed region champion Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood’s winning tally of 316.

Individually at the region meet, sophomore Ryan Ross shot an 18-hole score of 77 to earn 3rd place and senior Colin Lindahl scored an 83 to finish in 10th place; by finishing in the top 10, both players earned a spot on the All-Region Team.

At earlier state-qualifying meets, also at the Watford City course, Ross and junior Jaeden Jenson came in with scores under 79 to qualify individually for the state golf meet.

Once again, the weather on the first day of the state golf meet was not as nice as the golfers would have liked; high winds and cool temperatures made the already challenging Oxbow course even harder to handle. After the first day’s 18-hole round, Lewis & Clark found themselves in the top third of the 18-team field; their team score of 361 had them sitting in 6th place in the team standings.

Even though the sun still had trouble breaking through the clouds on Wednesday, the flags hung lifeless as Tuesday’s winds were all but completely absent for day two of the state meet. Like most of the participants, Lewis & Clark’s golfers all showed an improvement in their second 18-hole scores, resulting in a much more respectful team score of 343 on Wednesday.

However, Rugby’s team showed even more improvement with their score of 332 and passed the Lewis & Clark team to earn the 6th position in the final team standings, leaving Lewis & Clark to capture 7th place in the team contest, which was won by Kindred.

A total of 131 golfers participated in the individual portion of the state competition, which was won by Kindred’s David Talley with a two-day score of 149. Ryan Ross shot a 163 (84 + 79) to fall one stroke short of the top-10 All-State Team, finishing in a tie for 11th place. Jaeden Jenson finished in a tie for 21st place, just one stroke out of the top-20, with a score of 169 (85 + 84). Other scores for the Lewis & Clark team included Colin Lindahl’s 180 (91 + 89), junior Casey Peisar’s 192 (101 + 91), senior Dan Yale’s 199 (105 + 94), and junior Austin Brown’s 221 (121 + 100).

The Lewis & Clark boys’ golf team would like to thank all those involved in making this an enjoyable trip to the state golf meet, especially the players’ mothers who decorated the bus and provided snacks and drinks for the players and coaches to enjoy while attending the state meet.
