Led by a core group of experienced wrestlers, the Kenmare Honkers are optimistic about their chances going into their first competition Saturday in New Town.

To begin with, the team will have more grapplers than a year ago, twice as many in fact, and to coach Danny Mogren, that’s a huge plus despite some inexperience.

Mogren has seven new athletes, all seventh graders. That alone gives him some strategic options on the mat.

Last year’s biggest frustration was the team fighting hard all year long, but losing matches because too many weight classes had to be forfeited, according to Mogren.

He expects that scenario to be drastically different this season.

“What do you tell the guys when they win all their (individual) matches and lose 48-30,” Mogren said. “This year the season looks good. We’re very young, but we have good leadership and good experience.”
