The Kenmare Tobacco-Free Coalition continues its work with two activities to raise awareness about the importance of implementing a community ordinance to prohibit smoking in all public places around town.
A new “Smoke Free Kenmare” community organization page has been started on Facebook. The page offers a variety of reports about health problems caused by secondhand smoke, as well as announcements about other communities in North Dakota that have enacted smoke-free ordinances and about upcoming meetings and events of the Kenmare Tobacco-Free Coalition.
Children and teens in Kenmare and the surrounding area are invited to enter a smoke-free community poster contest sponsored by the Coalition. Kids ages 4 to 17 should create an original poster showing the benefits of a smoke-free community or the hazards of exposure to secondhand smoke.
The posters will be judged on their readability, theme and originality and must be 8 1/2 by 11 inches in size. Hand-drawn work is welcomed, and no computer-generated artwork will be accepted.
All posters are due for judging at the Kenmare Branch Library by Monday, August 1st, with a completed registration form, including a parent’s or guardian’s signature. The forms and more detailed contest rules are available now at the library, The Kenmare News office, and the FDHU office on the south side square.
The judges will award prizes for posters submitted by artists ages 4-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. One entry per artist is permitted, and all posters will become the property of the Kenmare Tobacco-Free Coalition. The artwork will be displayed in the community and used for other Coalition purposes.
The next meeting of the Kenmare Tobacco-Free Coalition will be held Tuesday, August 2nd, beginning at 12 noon at the Kenmare Branch Library to continue discussing resolutions of support received from organizations around town. Coalition members will also review the result of surveys sent to Association of Commerce members.
Anyone interested in seeing Kenmare become the next community in North Dakota to go smoke-free is welcome to attend. For more information, contact Pauline Nielsen at 701-385-4907 or Barb Scherbenske at 701-385-4412.
