When the dust settled and the 2013 State FFA Convention came to a close, it was concluded that the Kenmare FFA Chapter brought their best to the state competition and ended a very successful year. Twenty members attended the week-long State FFA Convention at NDSU in Fargo. The week kept members busy with contests, convention sessions, practices and fun.

This convention was a milestone for Charles Steinberger as he was named the 2013-14 North Dakota State FFA President. He’ll spend the year traveling across the state, putting on workshops, attending banquets, and handing out awards at various contests. The Kenmare Chapter wishes him the best on his position and looks forward to seeing him at various events throughout the year.

The Kenmare FFA Agricultural Communications and the Nursery/Landscape teams beat out the competition and were both named the 2013 North Dakota State High Team in their respective categories, advancing to the national competition in Louisville, KY in October.

The Ag Communications contest was a tight competition with 13 teams competing for the top spot. Charles Steinberger, McKenzie Chrest, Shantell Brekhus and Codee Gilbertson all took their place on the stage to receive their high team award.

The Nursery/Landscape team, consisting of Katie Nelson, Tayler Mau, Shelby Kittleson, Kennedy Chrest and Jordan Ankenbauer, was also recognized on stage as the high team. Katie Nelson was named the high individual in the Nursery/Landscape contest and received a Baby Bison trophy along with a certificate for a STIHL Farm Boss Chainsaw. Tayler Mau and Shelby Kittleson each received a gold award, Kennedy Chrest received silver and Jordan Ankenbauer received a bronze.

In the Meats Evaluation event, Kenmare members showed their strength as they were the third place overall team. Team members were Justice Brown, Dalton Petersen, Dani Kling and Rebekah Fetterhoff. All team members received a gold award.

The Floriculture team, consisting of Katie Nelson, McKenzie Chrest, Kennedy Chrest and Jordan Ankenbauer, received fourth place out of 25 teams. Katie Nelson was also the high individual in this contest and received another Baby Bison trophy. McKenzie and Kennedy Chrest received gold awards and Jordan Ankenbauer received a silver award.

In the Dairy Foods contest, Austin Redding led the group with a gold award. Charles Steinberger, Spencer King, and Mason Ankenbauer received silvers while Kelseye Lockhart received bronze. The team was awarded silver for their accomplishments.

In the FFA knowledge Quiz contest, team members received a silver team award. Taking the quiz were Justice Brown, who received a gold award, Austin Redding and Rebekah Fetterhoff, who received silvers, and Shantell Brekhus, who received a bronze award.

The Food Science team received a bronze team award for their efforts. Team members were Shelby Kittleson, Mason Ankenbauer, Tayler Mau and Bailey Grosser. Shelby Kittleson received a silver award, and Mason Ankenbauer received a bronze award.

The Small Animal Care team participated in the contest. On this team were Dani Kling, Spencer King and Kelseye Lockhart. Even though no team award was received, it was a learning experience for all members. Dani Kling did receive a bronze award in this event.

Codee Gilbertson received a gold and sixth place in the Job Interview CDE. Tanner King received a gold award for his participation in the FFA Courtesy Corps, while Dalton Petersen received a silver. Jordan Balvitsch received silver awards in the Farm Business Management and Prepared Public Speaking contests. Tanner King also received a silver award in the Basic Ag Mechanics contest.

Charles Steinberger served as a committee chair for the Resolutions Committee. Other Kenmare FFA delegates were Katie Nelson and Tayler Mau.

For one member, Caleen Crider, this was an especially exciting State Convention. Crider was nominated to receive her American Degree, which is the highest degree an FFA member can receive. The American FFA Degree will be bestowed upon her at the National Convention this October.

Charles Steinberger had another turn in the spotlight as he was awarded the State FFA Degree, which he will hang on his FFA jacket to symbolize his achievements.

Thank you to everyone who had a part in making our 2013 State FFA Convention a successful one!
