Drive-in becomes One Stop Burger Shop with new ownership

The Kenmare One Stop corner stays plenty busy, with the clothing and work wear sales, laundry facility, embroidery service, and rental storage units all in high demand. Now, owners David and Penny Sigloh invite their customers to swing by for a bite to eat at the One Stop Burger Shop, most recently called the Chill-n-Grill and known to Kenmare’s middle-aged residents as Liver’s Drive-In.

Change at the Chill-n-Grill . . . Kenmare's popular drive-in will open
for business on April 15th under new owners Penny and David Sigloh
as the One Stop Burger Shop.  Look for the new sign and new
"light menu" items, along with the burgers, fries and ice cream
treats that have been favorites with customers for years.

The Kenmare One Stop corner stays plenty busy, with the clothing and work wear sales, laundry facility, embroidery service, and rental storage units all in high demand.

 

Now, owners David and Penny Sigloh invite their customers to swing by for a bite to eat at the One Stop Burger Shop, most recently called the Chill-n-Grill and known to Kenmare’s middle-aged residents as Liver’s Drive-In.

 

As of the end of March, the Siglohs took over operation of the drive-in from previous owner Alicia Livingston, with the doors set to open to the public on April 15th.

 

“The opportunity was there,” Penny Sigloh said about her interest in purchasing the business. “We have people on staff here now with a lot of experience in restaurant work, and it sits right next to me. If it had been a mile down the road, I wouldn’t have thought about it!”

 

Penny has a little background in the food industry from her stint as manager of a pizza place in Minot several years ago. “I can make pizzas all day long, but I’m not going to do that here,” she said, laughing.

 

Instead, the Burger Shop has scaled back the Chill-n-Grill menu. “The menu is going to change,” Penny said. “We’re going to do the burgers and fries, but we’re also going to have fresh-made subs and salads. And we’re going to keep the ice cream, of course.”

 

As time goes on and customers make their preferences known, the Burger Shop menu will expand. “We’ve started basic, but we’ll add to it as we need it,” Penny said. “I know we’re going to do hot dogs and Coney dogs. I have a gal who works here from Texas and she’s taught us what Frito pies and Coneys really are!”

 

The Burger Shop will be open seven days a week from 11 am to 8 pm. The Siglohs will keep the same phone number customers know and love to call in their orders for pick-up. Penny also added two full-time and three part-time employees to her staff to cover both locations, with two part-time positions still available. “Three of us will be going back and forth between the One Stop and the Burger Shop,” she said.

 

She wants to start slowly with the Burger Shop, but she is committed to the continued success of the business. “We’re taking baby steps until we start making some plans,” she said. “We need to get up and running. This is new to us, so we’re going see how it goes.”

 

However, she admitted her mind is already whirling with changes she would like to make, starting with the lighter menu options and moving ahead to a different building. “This one is at the point where it needs to be remodeled or replaced,” she said. “We’re working on getting bids for the new building.”

 

Standing in the drive-in’s parking lot, she described her vision for the structure, including awnings set up to shelter customer’s cars. She would like to see construction begin later this summer, with the new facility ready for use by the fall months.

 

“The Burger Shop will continue to be a drive-in,” she said, “but when the new building is finished, we’d like to be open year-round. We’ll see how it goes.”

 

Penny glanced around at the One Stop “complex” as customers entered the store to check on tuxedo rentals for prom and embroidery orders. “This place keeps getting busier,” she said. “Who would have thought that, six years ago? But it’s fun, and the grocery stores and I are usually the first ones to see the new people in this town. There are a lot of them here and there are more coming!”

 

Those people will need to be fed, along with the drive-in’s faithful patrons. “We need another option for people to go out and eat,” Penny said. “And it’s tradition that we have to have a drive-in. There’s no getting around that!”
