Donnybrook Legion Auxiliary launches three projects to honor veterans and help students

The Clarence McCormack Post #195 American Legion Auxiliary of Donnybrook has launched three projects this month as a way to honor veterans and help students in Kenmare and Berthold schools.

The Clarence McCormack Post #195 American Legion Auxiliary of Donnybrook has launched three projects this month as a way to honor veterans and help students in Kenmare and Berthold schools.

Auxiliary members have started a drive to collect items needed by veterans who are patients in the Fargo VA Medical Center. Donations will be accepted from now through Saturday, December 8th, at the Gas Depot in Donnybrook.

Suggested items for the drive include travel-size, alcohol-free containers of shampoos, conditioner and mouthwash; packages of combs and brushes; toothbrushes and travel-size tubes of toothpaste; denture cream; lap robes or throws, at least 40” x 60”; playing cards, crossword puzzle books and word search books; surgery pillows, heart-shaped or square; small notebooks, about 6” x 10”.

Auxiliary members welcome the actual items or monetary contributions to purchase the items. For further information about the drive, contact MaryAnn Michel at 701-482-7877 or Marilyn Bott at 701-482-7739.

Pennies for Projects
for Veterans
The Post #195 Auxiliary has also joined the effort started by ND American Legion Auxiliary president Linda Juntunen to collect 1 million pennies, or $10,000, for veterans this year.

Juntunen’s goal includes dividing the funds collected among the Gladys Ray Veterans Drop-In Center in Fargo, the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon, the Girls State Foundation, and the Healing Gardens Project at the Fargo VA Medical Center.

Post #195 Auxiliary members have placed collection boxes for pennies at sites in Donnybrook and Carpio, and have enlisted the aid of students in grades three through six at Kenmare Elementary School.

Those students have started a contest to determine which class can collect the most pennies before November 30th, with a prize awarded to the winning classroom from the Post #195 Auxiliary.

Area residents who want to contribute to the Pennies for Projects for Vets effort should contact Bott at 701-482-7739.

Give 10 for Education
Post #195 Auxiliary members are also concerned about the success of students in area schools, so they have started their “Give 10 for Education” program for the 2012-2013 school year. The idea is to collect school supplies in groups of 10, such as 10 pairs of scissors, 10 boxes of crayons, 10 packages of pens, 10 notebooks, etc.

The Donnybrook-Carpio Auxiliary is also interested in receiving new caps, gloves and scarves to be used by children and teens.

Bott will be happy to receive the items by January 31, 2013, and can be contacted at the above number. “Then, we will divide everything between the schools in Kenmare and Berthold,” she said, adding that school staff distributes the materials to students in need. “By that time, a lot of kids are running out of the supplies they had to start the school year.”
