Berthold held to 8th place finish at State
The Lewis & Clark-Berthold boys varsity basketball team closed their season on Saturday with a 22-5 record and an eighth place finish at the State Class B Boys basketball tournament in Minot, after losses to Dakota Prairie, Bowman County and North Star. The Bombers entered the tournament with a 46.9 percent field goal average, but they ran into strong defensive strategies that limited their usual success at the basket.

The Bombers couldn’t find a way to shut down North Star’s Calvin Teubner Saturday afternoon. The Region 4 champion junior scored 25 points inside against Berthold and grabbed 14 rebounds, including 11 under the Bombers’ basket. Berthold lost the 7th place contest 56-73.
The two teams played a close first half, with the opening tip-off going to the Bearcats. They didn’t score on that possession, but came back down the court after the Bombers missed for sophomore Grant Lindahl to make his first points of the night. Daniel Yale tied the score within five seconds as he put in the first of his six field goals.
Teubner made his presence known on the next possession as he gave the Bearcats the lead, followed by another shot from Yale. The next two minutes of play saw plenty of end-to-end action, with both teams missing baskets on four possessions apiece. Finally, a Luke Hennessy drive put in 2 points, followed by a Lucas Bloms drive off a Michael White steal that sent Bloms to the free throw line and gave the Bombers an 8-4 margin.
Twenty seconds later, Bloms hit a three-point attempt, followed by points from Matt Yale and Clinton Axelson, for a 15-6 Berthold lead.
The Bearcats roared back into the game, scoring two unanswered baskets and free throws by Daniel Grande, Tanner Komrosky and Teubner. Lucas Bloms hit another three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the quarter for a 19-17 Berthold advantage, but Teubner matched it at the buzzer, and North Star went ahead 20-19.
The Bombers came out strong in the second quarter, with two jump shots from Dan Yale, followed by a feed to Yale from Axelson. Lyndon Bloms put Berthold ahead 27-21 on two free throws and the Bombers showed their best form on a down-court pass from Hennessy to Axelson, who tossed the ball through two Bearcats to Michael White for the open layup and a 29-21 margin.
Dan Yale added a free throw, but then the Bombers stayed at 30 points while the Bearcats got themselves back into the game on shots by Jacob Hagler and Komrosky and a pair by Teubner. Lyndon Bloms made a clear 3-point shot from the corner, but two Bearcat free throws and another field goal gave them the 34-33 edge at the half.
The third quarter opened with a flurry of shooting, including 3-pointers by Matt Yale and Hennessy, followed each time by a shot by Lindahl at the other end of the court. Lucas Bloms made an inside shot for a 41-38 Bombers lead, only to see North Star pull ahead on two field goals and a pair of free throws.
Lyndon Bloms tied the score at 44 with his second three-pointer at the 4:48 mark, but that would prove to be the Bombers’ last basket for over three minutes, while the Bearcats surged ahead 53-44 on baskets by Caleb Beck and Lindahl. The Bombers couldn’t get their shots to fall until Daniel Yale scored a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the period, but the Bearcats had the final word and took a 55-46 lead on another shot by Lindahl.
The Bearcats opened the fourth quarter with a basket and never looked back as Teubner and Beck shared much of the scoring.
Lucas Bloms and Dan Yale added points on free throws for the Bombers, along with an inside shot by Bloms, but the Bearcats stayed ahead by double digits the remainder of the game.
Lucas Bloms scored what proved to be the final points for the Bombers at the 2:09 mark on a three-point attempt.
In the meantime, the Bombers’ defense couldn’t stop the Bearcats as they ran up a total of 73 points. With a minute left to play, Berthold head coach Brock Teets substituted Joshua Brown, Chase Myers, Joey DeRouchey, Taylor Langan and Axelson to finish the game.
Lucas Bloms ended his high school basketball career with 18 points in the contest. Dan Yale posted a double-double performance with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lyndon Bloms added 8 points, Matt Yale 6, Hennessy 5, White 2 and Axelson 2.
Matt Yale pulled down 7 rebounds in the game. Hennessy grabbed 5 rebounds and made 4 assists. Tyler Birdsall had 3 assists in the game.
In addition to Teubner’s 25 points, the Bearcats were helped by 12 from Komrosky and 9 apiece from Hagler and Beck.
The Bombers shot 35 percent in field goals, making 19-of-54, while the Bearcats had a 47 percent success rate at 27-of-58.
Berthold was 52 percent in free throws at 11-of-21, while North Star sank 16-of-20 for 80 percent.
The Bombers came up with 31 rebounds, compared to 41 for the Bearcats. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.

The Bombers could hardly buy a basket in Friday’s consolation bracket game against Region 7 winner Bowman County, making only 15-of-52 field goals for 29 percent and losing the contest 45-58.
Berthold had faced the Bulldogs early in the season and took their first loss at 54-65.

The Bombers team had a strong first quarter, with a zone defense that slowed the Bulldogs’ offensive attack. Alex Wolf had the first basket of the game for
Berthold threw a full court press at the Bulldogs, but they scored on a basket by Brock Boos and two free throws by Fischer to go up 6-2. Lyndon Bloms came back with a drive that pulled the defense his direction, then passed off to White, open under the basket, for a quick shot. White contributed the next points of the game just over a minute later on an inside drive to tie the score at 6, but Wolf mirrored the move on the other end for an 8-6 Bulldogs’ advantage.

The Bombers ran a patient offense in the second quarter, but couldn’t get a shot to fall until the four-minute mark with Matt Yale on an inside look. Berthold scored again two minutes later on a drive by Hennessy, who was also fouled but missed the free throw. In the meantime, the Bulldogs saw production from Wolf, Boos, Tyson Harding and Kenzie Robertson, and managed to shut down the Bombers for the rest of the quarter. Berthold scored only 4 points, and trailed 13-22 at the half.
The basket seemed sealed to the Bombers in the third quarter as Matt Yale and Dan Yale both missed open looks. Matt Yale connected on two free throws at 6:17, but the Bulldogs ran up a 30-15 lead on field goals and free throws by Wolf, Fischer and Boos.
Halfway through the quarter, Lucas Bloms hit his only three-pointer of the day, but Wolf, Fisher, Boos and Robertson added baskets to build the Bulldogs’ lead to 40-19. With 48 seconds left in the quarter, Birdsall hit a shot, then made good on two free throws when he was fouled by Bulldogs’ guard Jake Mason at the end of the period.
The Bombers trailed 23-41 as the fourth quarter started, but Berthold had their best showing of the game in the final eight minutes, beginning with Matt Yale’s jump shot at 7:52. On the Bombers’ next possession, Yale drew a foul on a drive through the lane and sank both free throws. Dan Yale followed that up with an inside shot and White added a basket to pull Berthold within 14 points at 31-45.
The Bombers forced a couple of turnovers for
Berthold was on a roll, with free throws from Lyndon Bloms and drives from Matt Yale and Lucas Bloms that both netted points. Hennessy connected on a three-point attempt at 1:45 to pull the Bombers within 9 points at 45-54, but
Hennessy’s shot was Berthold’s final score in the game as the Bulldogs went on to win 58-45. Brown, Langan, Myers, Axelson and DeRouchey played the final 42 seconds for the Bombers.
Matt Yale finished the game with 15 points. White added 9 points, with 5 apiece from Lyndon Bloms, Hennessy and Lucas Bloms, 4 from Birdsall and 2 from Dan Yale.
Dan Yale came up with 9 rebounds for the Bombers, while White had 7. Lyndon Bloms finished with 4 assists.
Wolf led all players with 26 points, followed by 11 from Boos. Robertson had 8 assists, while Wolf had 9 rebounds, Boos 8 and Fischer 8.
The Bombers shot 85 percent from the free throw line, making 11-of-13 attempts, while the Bulldogs had 11-of-19 for 58 percent.

Bombers lead Knights
for three quarters
In opening round play Thursday, Berthold held the advantage over Region 2 champs Dakota Prairie through three quarters, but the Knights, who went on to finish as runners-up in the tournament, came back from a 10-point deficit to top the Bombers 65-52.
The Bombers ran a loose warm-up before the game and looked relaxed on the court, even as the Knights’ fans waved a “Bomb Squad” sign under the basket. Gus Kueber, who was eventually named the Tournament MVP, put the first points on the board 16 seconds into the game, but Matt Yale followed that up with a shot 20 seconds later. The teams played back and forth without scoring for over a minute, until the Knights added a second basket, but then the Bombers cut loose with back-to-back 3-pointers from Lucas Bloms for an 8-4 lead.
Kueber stepped in for another shot at 4:27, which would be the Knights’ final points in the quarter as the Bombers beat them out for nearly every rebound. Meanwhile, Lucas Bloms hit another 3-pointer from the corner, followed by a Dan Yale basket inside and a Hennessy jumper. Berthold fans went wild when their team blocked a shot at the 1:25 mark and Matt Yale made a steal to run the court and lay in two more points for a 17-6 lead.
Neither team scored in the final 52 seconds, but Berthold appeared to control the game’s momentum. Dakota Prairie ran nearly 30 seconds off the clock before taking the final shot of the quarter, but a block from Birdsall brought the Bombers fans’ to their feet as the Knights headed to their bench.
Kueber opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer, but Lucas Bloms answered with one of his own in the next possession for a 20-9 margin. Alex Herman scored for the Knights while Bloms and Matt Yale both missed shots, but at 6:05 Bloms connected for yet another 3-pointer. At the other end of the court, Hennessy blocked a Kueber attempt and White pulled down a defensive rebound as the Bombers continued to dominate the game. Lucas Bloms took an inside drive for a 25-11 lead.
Fouls from Dan Yale, Birdsall and Lyndon Bloms allowed the Knights to gain four points on free throws, but Birdsall redeemed himself with a jump shot at 3:54 and Hennessy stretched the lead to 30-15 with a 3-point attempt. The Knights looked frustrated as the Bombers’ zone defense redirected their passes, but Tyler Luehring and Kueber found their way to the basket.
Lucas Bloms scored his sixth 3-point shot with 1:24 left to play for a 33-19 spread. Fouls by Birdsall allowed free throws from Herman and Brody Morken, but the Bombers took a 33-23 lead into the half. Lucas Bloms had 20 points for Berthold and White had 5 offensive rebounds at that point, while Kueber had been held to 7 points for the Knights.
The third quarter opened with a shot from Kueber 24 seconds into the period. Herman hit a 3-pointer and Kyle Lamb made a shot to shorten Berthold’s lead to 35-30. Lucas Bloms put up a jump shot for a 37-30 margin, but a foul by Dan Yale gave Kueber two points on free throws, and then Morken pulled his team with a single point of the Bombers at the 4:40 mark.
The Bombers stayed patient, with Lucas Bloms hitting a shot and Hennessy running a careful offense. A drive by Bloms resulted in a free throw for the Bombers, while another foul sent White to the line for two. Points also came from Lyndon Bloms and Dan Yale, although Kueber responded with two buckets of his own. Matt Yale dropped a turn-around jump shot with 42 seconds left in the period, but Luehring had the last word with a basket at the 26 second mark. The third quarter ended 48-42 in the Bombers’ favor.
The Knights rallied at their bench in the fourth quarter and came out to score 23 points while holding Berthold to 6. Kueber put up two quick baskets, while Matt Yale had two of his shots blocked. Kueber tied the game at 48 with two free throws on a Dan Yale foul, then pulled ahead as Hennessy missed a 3-point attempt for the Bombers. Morken made the same shot for the Knights, and in less than a minute, Dakota Prairie added four points on free throws, although fouls also allowed a point each for Lucas Bloms and Matt Yale from the charity stripe to cut the Knights’ lead to five points.
Kueber scored on a layup, but Hennessy followed with a jump shot for a 52-57 score at 1:35. His shot was the last successful basket for Berthold in the game, while the Knights stretched out their offense to draw fouls. Herman added 8 points from the free throw line, while the Bombers’ attempts to reduce the margin missed their mark.
With 27 seconds remaining, Coach Teets substituted Brown, Langan, Myers, Axelson, and DeRouchey as Dakota Prairie ran out the clock for the win.
Lucas Bloms led all players in the game with 28 points. Hennessy added 7, White 6, Dan Yale 4, Matt Yale 3, and Lyndon Bloms 2.
White finished with 9 rebounds in the game, while Lucas Bloms and Matt Yale pulled down 6 apiece.
Hennessy dished out 5 assists, with 4 from White and 3 by Lucas Bloms.
The Knights were led by 27 points and 16 rebounds from Kueber. Herman added 18 points and Morken 12.
For the game, Berthold shot 32 percent, making 19-of-60 field goals, while the Knights shot 44 percent with 19-of-43 baskets.
Dakota Prairie was 92 percent from the free throw line, at 23-of-25, while the Bombers made 58 percent of their free throws at 7-of-12.
The Knights finished with 38 rebounds and 16 turnovers, and the Bombers had 30 rebounds and 10 turnovers.
In Thursday’s other games, Region 1 champion North Sargent topped North Star 75-64. Region 3 champion Linton edged Region 8 winner
