New coach

and six seniors

Lewis & Clark-Berthold head coach Jennifer Miller likes the experience she sees on her roster with the six seniors. “They’ve been playing together four years now,” she said. “We’re quick, and there are a few girls on the team who are looking to score all the time, ready to go to the basket. We’re all on the same page.”

Miller wants to see her players work on their rebounding skills and their court awareness as the season progresses. “We need to slow it down a little bit,” she said, “and make the smart decisions out there.”

Fans should see plenty of action on the court from the girls. According to Miller, the girls will play an aggressive style of basketball, using their press. “We’re going to push the ball up and down the floor, and create some things on offense,” she said. “We’re pretty short, so we have to use our quickness to our advantage.”

Miller said her team is especially looking forward to playing Kenmare, Our Redeemer’s and Bishop Ryan this season, with another contest against Surrey on the calendar, too. “Our district is pretty strong,” she added.

As the coach, she’s looking for the players to develop some chemistry together on the court as the team makes its way through the district schedule. “We want to be a major contender in the district and regional tournaments,” she said.

The six seniors will be a major factor in achieving that goal, and Miller rotates them as captains, two for each game. “I want them to show the younger girls how it’s done,” she said, “and they really have taken over that leadership role.”

Miller herself grew up in Velva, playing basketball for the Aggies before continuing at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she was also an assistant coach for the Cobbers. She taught and coached at a high school in Washington state before returning to North Dakota as a teacher and coach at St. Mary’s in Bismarck.

She started with the Lewis & Clark school district in August, accepting the position of technology coordinator after working as a business teacher in Sawyer. “I was looking for something a little different,” she said. This is her first season with the Bombers girls basketball team.
