Enrollment numbers held fairly steady at Lewis & Clark-Berthold Public School as 260 students filled the desks during the first week of the 2010-2011 school year.

Opening week enrollment at Kenmare Elementary School, with 165 students, is the highest seen since the first day of school in August 2000, when 166 kids filled the desks in grades kindergarten through six.

Dennis Bauer stood at the edge of a wheat field Friday night, coordinating the work of two combines, a grain wagon and a semi-trailer harvesting the crop. One of the combines, a John Deere 9770 STS with a 35-foot header, flew the United States flag and the Farm Rescue organization banner, “They’re making good progress,” he said.

A strong EF3 tornado that touched down about a mile east of Bowbells Thursday night impacted three households in Burke and Ward counties on both sides of the Lakeshore crossing, with nearly complete destruction of the Dennis Bauer farm and severe damage to the Tim and Colette Bryan farm on the west side of the Des Lacs Lake and to the Ronnie Brekhus house and yard, occupied by Gary Egeberg and Dawn Matthews, on the east side of the lake.

The 42 postal customers who received their mail in boxes at the Donnybrook Post Office had a surprise waiting for them with the deliveries made August 9th. They were informed in a letter signed by Wanda Cleveland, manager of Post Office Operations in Bismarck, that their local post office would close its doors on Saturday, August 14th.

The Berthold City Council relocated from City Hall to the Sportsmen’s building across Main Street for their regular meeting Monday night. The move was necessary to accommodate the number of local residents who showed up to speak about Enbridge’s request to have an 80-acre parcel of land rezoned from agricultural to industrial use for a proposed expansion of their facilities.
