On March 15th, Governor Jack Dalrymple signed into law House Bill 1219, legislation that designates the Convergent Lady Beetle, commonly known as the ladybug, as the official state insect. The Governor signed the bill during a ceremony at the state Capitol. He was joined by legislators and second grade students Megan Zimmer, Isabel Schwab, Jaden McNeiley and Logan Redding from Kenmare Elementary School, who were instrumental in passing the legislation.

The Kenmare Honkers girls basketball team made their third straight appearance in the Class B state tournament last weekend in Bismarck. They came home with a fourth place finish, the best showing for seniors Katie King, Erika Lemere and Kortni Miller, who have played on the state court in all three tournaments.

In an unusual move, the Kenmare school board reversed itself March 15th when board members revisited the topic of mandatory band for fifth and sixth grade students.

Kenmare school board members talked about a variety of topics and changes for the district during a retreat held March 9th, but the only official business they conducted that day was an evaluation of Superintendent Duane Mueller.

The Honkers’ top scorer Katie King was held to 12 points in the game, the lead changed sides a few times, and the Aggies refused to back off their full court press, but Kenmare earned a third straight appearance to the state Class B girls basketball tournament with a 51-40 win in the Region 6 championship game Thursday night.

If the legislators at work during a Senate floor session on March 8th would have paused and opened a window in the Capitol building that afternoon, they could possibly have heard the echoes of a cheer sent up from the Kenmare Elementary students after HB 1219 was passed by those senators.

Voters in the Kenmare school district will have the opportunity on June 14th to approve a five mill levy to be used specifically for technology needs in the district. At the current district valuation of over $9 million, the levy would generate approximately $47,000 annually.

The North Dakota Senate Political Subdivisions Committee considered HB 1219 on Friday, also known as the “Ladybug Bill,” and were treated to a professional, colorful multi-media presentation the bill from Kenmare second graders Megan Zimmer, Isabel Schwab, Logan Redding and Jaden McNeiley.
