Special, November 10, 2010 -- A World War I and II Service Record from the Kenmare area listed the names of 17 men killed in action.

For several weeks through the volleyball season, Kenmare’s junior middle hitter Katie King carried around a small slip of paper she received in a fortune cookie after a meal she and senior defensive specialist Meghan Essler enjoyed at Ying Bin restaurant. Before breaking the cookie open, the two of them joked about a fortune predicting Kenmare would defeat Hazen in the Class B state volleyball tournament.

The North Dakota High School Activities Association lists 111 teams participating in the 2009 season for Class B volleyball. Eight of those teams are still holding practices this week in preparation for the state tournament that begins tomorrow. For the fourth consecutive year, the Kenmare Honkers (41-3) are among those elite eight teams, after clinching the Region 6 championship in a battle with Our Redeemer’s Christian School last week.

Touring hours have ended for the season, but there’s still plenty of activity taking place at Kenmare’s Pioneer Village this fall, thanks in large part to a $14,325 grant from the North Dakota State Historical Society.

Kenmare Veteran’s Club, Inc., is known for being generous with their charitable gaming funds. After all, they just served as the 2009 corporate sponsor for the Kenmare GooseFest. Then they capped that celebration with the announcement during Saturday’s banquet of a $50,000 donation to the Kenmare Fire Department’s fire hall building project.
